Northern Nevada's June Luncheon

The Future of Local Journalism

For our last meeting before the break for summer, we will be joined by Brian Duggan, the executive editor of the Reno Gazette Journal. After experiencing years of cutbacks at the local news organization, he started a field of interest fund with the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada to pave a path forward to directly pay for public service journalism in Northern Nevada. In January 2022, the Reno Gazette Journal Fund for Public Service Journalism hired its first reporter to cover local government in the Reno area. Duggan is working to grow awareness about the importance of direct community support for journalism, including the RGJ Fund, why local news organizations must adapt in order to thrive again.

Brian Duggan is the executive editor of the Reno Gazette Journal. He’s an award-winning newsroom leader with more than a decade of experience covering Northern Nevada as a journalist. Prior to becoming the editor of Northern Nevada’s largest digital media outlet, he served as the RGJ's investigations editor and its city reporter when he joined the news organization in 2011. Before that, Duggan covered business for the Nevada Appeal and state politics for the Bismarck Tribune in North Dakota. Duggan is a Nevada native who grew up in Las Vegas and graduated in 2008 from the University of Nevada, Reno where he occasionally serves as an adjunct journalism instructor. In 2017, he earned a master’s degree in public administration with a public policy certificate from the University of Southern California’s Sol Price School of Public Policy. He lives in Reno with his wife Megan Duggan, their two boys and dog Cali. They enjoy what Northern Nevada has to offer — from its many outdoor treasures to Reno's vibrant and growing culture.
