Women, Leadership, and the Next Generation

Tuesday, March 8th

In honor of Women's History Month, we will be hearing from Dr. Caryll Dziedziak, history professor at UNLV, about all of the programs at WRIN, their efforts to document the role of women in Nevada’s history, and the changes continuously being made to support Nevada women.

Dr. Dziedziak is a trained oral historian who has worked with other scholars to document the contributions and significance of women in Nevada. She is also the co-founder and director of the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN). Notable WRIN projects include: MAKERS: Women in Nevada History documentary series and teaching guides, National Education for Women (NEW) Leadership program for college women teaching leadership skills and civic engagement, Legislative Research Briefs, Gender Research Roundtable presentations, Empowerment Scholarships, and the GALS with HEART educational enrichment program for middle school girls.

The Women’s Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) is a statewide institute located at UNLV. We are entering our 23rd year of supporting programs aimed at improving the lives of women in Nevada through research, education, mentoring, and scholarships.  Our latest project partners with a local girls' charter school from the nearby neighborhood. With grants and private funding, we are able to provide educational enrichment programs using our NEW Leadership alumnae as role models and mentors to empower the next generation of budding women leaders.

Long supported by Nevada IWF, WRIN is closely aligned with our mission and is a hallmark program for our state.  Seven members of Nevada IWF are involved with WRIN and are engaged in their efforts through their honorary community advisory board.  These members include former US Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, Jan Jones Blackhurst, Pat Mulroy, Julie Murray, Miriam Shearing, Carolyn Sparks, and Dr. Kate Zhong.
