First, internationally renown painter Phyllis Schafer will be on hand to talk about her creative process and her career.
Phyllis Shafer received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley. As a practicing artist, Shafer has exhibited her work nationally and internationally since 1984. She is currently represented by Stremmel Gallery in Reno, NV, where she has had six solo exhibitions. In 2014, the Nevada Museum of Art staged a mid-career retrospective exhibition of her paintings titled, “I Only Went Out for a Walk”.
“I believe that a kind of transcendental essence lies at the heart of all natural forms and objects. There is a concept in Zen Buddhist painting known as kiin-seido, meaning ‘living moment’ or the immediate, intuitive expression of a subject’s essential nature. While I am not a practitioner of Zen Buddhism, I am interested in this concept as it relates to our experience of landscape. My artistic goal is, through the process of painting, to distill and crystallize that essence and the vital rhythms that animate it.”
-Phyllis Shafer
This will be a special meeting that you will want to be sure to attend!!
